In the past few months, the COVID-19 Pandemic has taken the world by storm with thousands of new cases reported every day. The influx of COVID-19 tests being done on a daily basis have flooded the laboratories and many of the existing facilities were not prepared for the inundation of samples to be tested against this virus.
To assist in fighting the pandemic in South Africa, Volkswagen Group South Africa in Port Elizabeth has donated Personal Protective Equipment to the Provincial Health Ministry to ensure that health care workers are well-equipped to fight their battles with their COVID-19 patients on a daily basis. Together with the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) in Port Elizabeth, they converted offices to establish a fully functioning Molecular Virology lab in only 18 days, more than doubling their capacity to test for COVID-19.
When working with hazardous samples and pathogenic viruses, such as COVID-19, work should be conducted in a Class ll Biosafety Cabinet to protect the operator from the biohazards they are working with, as well as to protect the sample from contamination. Volkswagen South Africa purchased two of our 4ft Esco Airstream® Class ll Biosafety Cabinets, which we installed in the new Virology labs. These Biosafety Cabinets allow the lab staff to work safely while conducting tests on their COVID-19 samples.
Esco has the widest range of certifications making it the top-most preferred brand by leading universities, research institutes, hospitals, pharmaceutical, IVF centers, biotech companies and testing and quality control laboratories.
This collaboration shows that if we all work together, we can overcome even the biggest of challenges.
